This photo, featured in the 1999 (last) Official Illinois Central Calendar,
shows what is probably the City of New Orleans heading north along the river
front on January 7, 1947.
Todays City of New Orleans heads South along the riverfront towards the
refurbished Central Station.
This picture was taken in the early 1980's from Mud Island and shows IC
intermodal train P-52 headed to Chicago.
This
view looking north shows the passenger main as it appears today. In the
background is the Pyramid Arena while to the left is Mud Island Park which
is reached by the monorail crossing the Memphis Harbor.
Today, what used to be the Southbound main is used by the Riverfront Trolley,
while the Northbound main is by Amtrak's "City of New Orleans" and on rare
occasions by Illinois Central intermodal trains.
All that remains of the old Poplar Street Street Station is a brick wall
between two stone pillars. The pillars are part of the original facade of
the station, while the brick wall seals what once was the entrance. It was
from this station that Casey Jones made his
famous last run on April 29th, 1900.
